2006
September

This year the Upper New York AACE chapter meeting was held on September 29 & 30, 2006 at the Mirbeau Inn in Skaneateles, New York.

The meeting was well attended and included presentations on primary hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, osteonecrosis due to bisphosphonate therapy, type 2 diabetes mellitus in youth, celiac disease, Paget’s disease of bone, hypokalemia and endocrine hypertension, and the new ADA recommendations for exercise.

These presentations led to several interesting discussions. Dr. Zachary Freedman presented the dinner lecture on “The Role of Incretin Hormones in Glucose Management”. Many areas from central and western New York were represented (Buffalo, Syracuse, Elmira, Rochester).

We encourage you to attend our next meeting in Cooperstown, New York in 2007!

2005
November

The Annual Meeting of the Upstate New York Chapter of the AACE was held at The Sagamore on Lake George on October 14 & 15th. The following is a summary prepared by Dr. Marya Gendzielewski, this year’s Program Chair:

Everyone who attended had a great time both professionally and personally. The presentations were a great information resource and also helped to set the stage for some really interesting discussion. This year we got to learn about osteoporosis and its relationship to diabetes, exercise programs and management of diabetes from the CDE and physical therapist point-of-view and some new information regarding management by Dr. Vera Fajtova from Brigham & Womens in Boston. Her passion and dedication to that group of patients was clearly evident and she couldn’t have been more approachable and generous with access to information. I hope that all of us there will be able to take some of her experience and put it to work in our own hospitals.

The next day brought us some case presentations on hyperparathyroidism, as well as the use of thyroid ultrasound in managing our patients with cancer. Finally, Dr. Arnold Moses gave us an update on the poster presentations by the recent fellows at University Hospital.

I wanted to thank everyone who attended and took time to prepare a presentation. I can’t say enough about the fun of this meeting. Dr. Roberto Esquierdo has agreed to spearhead the meeting for next year. We were thinking about having it in Skaneateles as a change of pace.

For anybody in the Upstate Chapter with ideas or suggestions, please feel free to give either myself or Joe Torre a call about how we could better serve your needs with this annual getaway. Those of us that have gone the last two years have found this format to be accessible and informative but certainly we are open to any suggestions. I can pass them along to Roberto.

Again, thanks for everyone’s participation. We look forward to a bigger turnout next year so we can share in the fun with the rest of our colleagues.
